So this is the podcast I am talking about - it is 4 hours long but I managed to watch it all. This is also most recent time I enjoy such a long content like this, you know I am trying to get my attention span back. During the podcast, the two talked about money and its latest form which is bitcoin. For the record yes I am a bitcoin hodler but I also have enough reasons to put enough of my trust in it. The interesting thing that keep me watching it till end is the depth of the conversation. Money is one the earliest yet greatest invention ever made in the human history and there’s a siginificant history event attached to everytime the concept of money change. But, the tricky thing about this pod is about the interviewee Saife Ammous - this guy is an arnarchist and a bitcoin marxis (as a result or vice versa). To explain further, arnachist is a word to describe someone who is against / disapprove the government and bitcoin marxis is to describe a person who put all of his money into bitcoin, not real estate, gold or any altcoin. According to him - “land is a shit coin”.
The guy is pretty intellectually attractive I would say apparently, I spent that much time listening to his thoughts. But I also feel the danger while taking in his ideas. So this blog is my detox treatment and a chance for me to use my critical thinking to make sure that I stay on my ground and have my own thinking on complex problems.
So here are of what I disagree with him for now:
- He said that fiat money - the money that does not follow gold standard but instead based on government’s credit is the reason we have world war because the England would have left the war with German when they have no resource left and therefore the conflict would have ended right at that point without scaling to global scale. I dont think that make sense because limited condition can also create tension, things can always go negative. Throughout the history, people have always fought on scarce resource and at some point fighting a war was considered as a good way for a nation to expand its treasury. Until recently, when we discover a new economy that based on the utility of information and knowledge like IT, we start to see a way out of this turbulence. So for me, abundant / infinite amount is not necessarily a bad thing as it provide more space for people to thrive on. Back to the story, I think fiat has little thing to do with war, it might make our lives harder some points but we should not hastily attribute it to the cause of war. War to me is a premature yet constant state of people and we are learning to spend that state in a more peaceful, enjoyable way like competing in sport and we are heading there with or without fiat.
- About his perspective on Bitcoin, apparently he is an expert but the metal of going all in on one asset just does not make sense to me. On talking about how bitcoin is a better asset compared to gold, he made a point when he say the only way to verify gold is that you have to melt it (to make sure the whole bar is gold) but I dont think it is the only way because we obviously can try Archimedes way - dip it in water to calculate the density of metal. But as just research while writing this, there is also other ways to verify the purity of gold and the Archimedes way can be less accurate when dealing with large amount of gold so in overall there is many other ways.
How to Test Gold Using Specific Gravity.
- With a lot of advantage, I am with him that bitcoin is an advanced technology and if it pull off then it is so great to see how the world go around it. But that’s a big if because the test of time is still there and Bitcoin has only been around for 12 years. So I think I will keep diversifying my portfolio while keeping an eye on Saife’s prophet.
